Side Lines

A Play by Gerard Dunning

Where everyone's an expert. Game On!

Genre: Ensemble Comedy

Setting:A cold Saturday monring on the rugby field side lines

Concept & Style: An ensemble comedy built around the conversations that happen while something else is taking place. Set during a junior Rugby Union match, the play explores the rituals of Saturday morning sport through overlapping dialogue, observational humour and recognisable Australian characters. While the rugby provides the backdrop, the play is ultimately about friendship, community, parenting and the relationships that quietly develop on the sideline over years of shared routine. Conversations overlap, stories meander, and seemingly trivial moments gradually reveal something much deeper. Warm, relatable and quietly nostalgic.

Structure & Staging: Presented as a single continuous act with no scene changes or blackouts. Movements are defined by shifts in rhythm rather than changes in location. New arrivals, changes in play, injuries, halftime, and the ebb and flow of conversation naturally shape the dramatic progression. The action remains entirely on the sideline. The rugby match is never seen by the audience; instead, it exists through the reactions, conversations and observations of the characters. The audience effectively occupies the position of the playing field, allowing the unseen game to become a shared act of imagination. The emphasis is on authentic interaction rather than spectacle, making the play highly adaptable for both intimate theatres and larger stages.

Characters:

3F • 5M
  • Dave Mason: (Male, late 30s–40s) Volunteer junior rugby coach. Patient, practical and perpetually under pressure
  • Tanya Wilkes: (Female, 40s) Mother of a player. Fiercely opinionated, fiercely protective and never knowingly under-reacting
  • Graham Wilkes: (Male, 40s–50s) Tanya's husband. Easy-going, diplomatic and well-practised at smoothing over awkward situations
  • Hēmi Rangi: (Male, 40s) A solo father originally from New Zealand. Warm, witty and passionately loyal to the All Blacks
  • Brett Murphy: (Male, 40s–50s) Father of a player. Thoughtful, quietly competitive and convinced he understands the game better than most
  • Kylie Murphy: (Female, 40s) Brett's wife. Endearingly dishevelled, quick-witted and entirely comfortable being herself
  • Maya Chen: (Female, late 30s–40s) A solo mum whose husband is frequently away for work. Organised, perceptive and unfailingly capable
  • Nigel Frost: (Male, 50s–60s) A quiet, thoughtful observer who occasionally returns to the rugby sideline despite no longer having a child in the game

Creative Tone: Balancing observational humour with genuine emotional warmth. The comedy grows naturally from recognisable personalities, everyday conversations and the familiar rituals of junior sport, while quieter moments reveal themes of friendship, belonging, parenting and the passing of time. Funny, authentic and distinctly Australian, it celebrates the extraordinary relationships that can grow from the most ordinary Saturday mornings.

Production Note: Designed for community, independent and professional theatre companies, Side Lines is an ensemble piece that rewards strong character acting, naturalistic dialogue and precise comic timing. The play is particularly well suited to companies that enjoy ensemble storytelling, nuanced character work and distinctly Australian observational comedy.

Audience: Ideal for adult audiences, particularly: Community theatre patrons, Regional and suburban audiences, Viewers aged 35+, Anyone familiar with, or fond of local clubs, committees, and town traditions. The play resonates strongly with audiences who enjoy character-driven comedy and stories that celebrate the humour found in everyday life. It offers laughter without cynicism and nostalgia without sentimentality.
